Making Tamales 101

20 Dec

The only thing i ever ask my mom for my birthday is tamales. She makes the most delicious tamales ever. So this year i decided to document the making of our family’s almighty tamales.

My mom learned how to make tamales from my grandmother, who has then taught me and my sisters how to cook them. Even though i have assisted in the preparation, wrapping, and eating of tamales, by no means could i ever accomplish this alone. You always need at least 2 to 3 people in the conveyer belt of folding the tamal in the banana leaf.

Heres most of the process…Enjoy….

It begins with the base. This is rice, liquified in the grinder, and now boiled to make it nice …

… and now cover it with some leaves, throw some plastics bags over it and some cloth so that the steam remains… (brought to you by liborio’s – L.A.’s central american super market)

Then, you finally have to let it cook for another two hours….it was midnight by the time we finished cooking.

so for my birthday breakfast i had tamales…and then for lunch the CP mafia came over and enjoyed them…

….and then i ate them again for dinner with the homies…and for one more breakfast, squeeze in another lunch meal with tamales… and 24 hours later only 2 were left…
